US/Canada Winter Classic Doubleheader?

From NHL Fanhouse. Interesting idea, I have heard several ideas of Washington DC hosting the first game and Ottawa hosting the second game. Interesting proposal.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- FanHouse asked NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Wednesday at the Board of Governor's meeting about the possibility of a Canadian team getting into the Winter Classic and he announced that the NHL is planning a second Winter Classic to be held in Canada next season. Bettman said that there had been talk about a Canadian Winter Classic this year but it didn't come together. Next season's potential event has yet to be nailed down, but if it comes together, it would be on the schedule, which should be released during the NHL draft in June.

Teams and location are to be determined, but all six Canadian teams are interested in both hosting and playing in it if not hosting, according to Bettman. The Maple Leafs made an official request to host, but the best bet is believed to be Calgary for the initial Canadian Winter Classic.Bettman said that it's unclear if there would be a U.S./Canadian Winter Classic on New Year's or if the Canadian event would be held on Hockey Day, which is generally on a Saturday in February.

  1. Winter classic 2011:

Phoenix vs Dallas in winnipeg. Stars wearing North Stars sweaters and coyotes wearing Winnipeg Jets sweaters (seeing as thats where the Coyotes moved from)

Other possibilities: have the game in Quebec with the Avalanche sporting Nordiques sweaters or on the east coast have the Carolina Hurricanes rep Hartford Whalers sweaters. Some of these scenarios could be sick.

  2. You want Dallas in it? What about Dallas vs Minnesota, the battle of the the Stars vs the Old Stars. Minnesota has 2 new ball parks, the UM football stadium and the new Twins park.

  3. I'm just throwing out possibilities where teams can sport their old sweaters. I'm sure winnipeg would appreciate a good winter classic game and because they haven't seen an NHL game in their city since 1996. Also, Colorado going back to play one more game in Quebec as the Nordiques would be great for the city of Quebec. Dallas/Minnesota would be a good game too. I'm good friends with Mike Modano and I know he would really enjoy playing in a winter classic game during one of his last years and to do it where his incredible career started would be even more special.
